Maja Munivrana Vajda

Dr. Maja Munivrana Vajda is Associate Professor at the Department of Criminal Law, Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb, Croatia. She graduated from the Faculty of Law in Zagreb in 2003, where she received her first Master of Laws degree in 2007. She also holds a Master of Laws degree from Yale Law School (2008) and Doctor of Laws degree from Zagreb University (2011). From 2015 to 2017 she was the head of the Institute of Criminal Law Sciences, Criminology and Victimology at the Faculty of Law in Zagreb.
She teaches Criminal Law, International Criminal Law, EU Substantive Criminal Law and Protection of Victims (Jean Monnet Module Leader), Criminal Law and Children, and Law and Film at the graduate and postgraduate level. She was Croatian national reporter for the 18th International Congress of Penal Law (AIDP) in 2009 (‘The Principle of Universal Jurisdiction’), for the 15th FIDE Congress in 2012 (‘The Area of Freedom, Security and Justice, Including Information Society Issues’) and Croatian national coordinator for European Sourcebook of Crime and Criminal Justice Statistics (5th edition). Currently, she is Croatian national co-reporter for the next AIDP Congress (‘Individual Liability for Business Involvement in International Crimes’).
She is a recipient of the Dean’s Award for Best Graduated Student in 2003/2004, annual Croatian award to Best Young Scientists in Social Sciences in 2009, research scholarship at Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law in 2010, Visiting Professionals Placement at the International Criminal Court in 2013, and the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences Visiting Professors Program 2018 (starting in 2019). She is a member of the Presidency of the Croatian Academy of Legal Sciences, invited member of Croatian Law Centre (and since 2017, of its Advisory Board), member of the Advisory Board of Croatian Branch of the Coalition of Positive Messengers to Counter Online Hate Speech and of several other professional associations and expert groups (such as for amendments of Croatian Criminal Code and for the ratification and implementation of the Istanbul Convention). She was also a national criminal justice expert for several domestic and international research projects, a member of the editorial board of Croatian Annual of Criminal Law and Practice and invited lecturer at a number of domestic and several international conferences. Her publications include a monograph, three textbooks (co-author), a Criminal Code Commentary (co-author) and a number of articles in legal periodicals or chapters in collective volumes, focusing foremost on international criminal law and national prosecutions of international crimes as well as intersection of human rights and criminal law.
